GINGER is the second most important culinary herb of the Indian Kitchen.It’s a close botanical relative of Turmeric.

It’s rich in kaempferol an antioxidant that inhibits the Cox-2 enzyme, that produces prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain.It also blocks lipoxygenase, another enzyme that promotes production of inflammatory compounds.It also contains trace amounts of melatonin, a hormone otherwise made by the pineal gland that has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. (1) Ginger is helpful in treating osteoarthritis, rheumatism and muscular pain. (2) It’s helpful in reducing morning sickness and motion sickness. (3) A study published in The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, researchers found it to be effective against nausea following Surgery. (4) In another study researchers found that ingesting a combination of 1000mg of powdered ginger root twice daily, along with a protein-rich drink eased the nausea associated with chemotherapy.
